In 2024 Spotlight launched ‘Spotlight UK Scarlett’s Smiles’ to support children who have a parent or sibling who has a terminal illness or long term illness, children with terminal illness or long term medical condition, children in care, young carers and adult carers, children who have experienced traumatic loss or separation, and children affected by domestic abuse.

About Scarlett

From an early age, 10-year-old Scarlett from Basingstoke has faced daily challenges due to medical conditions that affect her mobility, leaving her extremely fatigued, and often causing severe pain. Scarlett, who has a serious brain malformation and extensive spinal syrinx, nearly lost her life as a baby. Since then, she has undergone two major brain surgeries and spent many months in hospital. She continues to need help with most aspects of daily life, with the simplest of tasks taking her a long time. Through her daily struggles, Scarlett remains brave and cheerful. Rather than feeling sorry for herself, Scarlett saves her own bravery for other children in hospital, reads to them, and, along with her sister, Sienna, saves up her pocket money to buy new toys for hospital wards. Having been bullied herself for using a wheelchair, Scarlett also campaigns to promote kindness, a quality she possesses in abundance. Talented and creative, Scarlett dreams of becoming a children’s author and spends much of her time immersed in books and producing her own creative writing. She is described as a constant ray of sunshine, who deserves to have a smile on her face for all the joy she has brought to other children.

Scarlett has always wanted to inspire other children facing difficulties, so she teamed up with Spotlight UK, and Scarlett’s Smiles was born. ‘Scarlett Smiles’ is charity campaign which supports children dealing with various challenges.

Special Experiences

 

Spotlight UK Scarlett’s Smiles are providing special experiences to create strong positive memories for those in difficult situations. These types of days out include trips to the West End, Go Ape, paddleboarding, car rally experiences and general pamper days.

The criteria for this scheme is as follows:

1. Children who have a parent or sibling who has a terminal illness or long term illness.
2. Children with terminal illness or long term medical condition
3. Children in care
4. Young carers and adult carers
5. Children who have experienced traumatic loss or separation
6. Children affected by domestic abuse

Show A Little Love

‘Show A Little Love’ is Spotlight UK’s Care Package Scheme. This is where we collect and buy supplies for a box of gifts that we distribute to children who need ‘A Little Love’.

Giving a little bit of hope and care to those who need it most. This package is designed to help people smile in tough times.  

In the past, items such as small teddy bears, jars of hope, toiletries, notepads and more have been included, each giving a small reminder that the recipient is not alone and someone is thinking of them.  

We have donated around 5000 so far in last 2 years and you can help by Fundraising, Donating, or acting as a collection point. This can be a great team building task, or even a challenge between teams or classes.

We want to provide more accessible activities to those that are especially struggling right now. Each child should have opportunities to develop their confidence, self-esteem and social interaction that will allow them to flourish mentally, physically and emotionally. This scheme is to be able to offer free places to a number of the activities that we run.

The criteria for this scheme is as follows:

1. Children who have a parent or sibling who has a terminal illness or long term illness.
2. Children with terminal illness or long term medical condition
3. Children in care
4. Young carers and adult carers
5. Children who have experienced traumatic loss or separation
6. Children affected by domestic abuse
7. Children from Armed Forces Families who have a parent serving abroad

Emergency Supplies

 

We provide clothes, toys and other items to those truly in need. Whether it be from fleeing domestic abuse, poverty or other dire circumstances, we want to provide necessary items where we can.

Due to the nature of this work we do require a referral via a professional body such as a care worker.

What is a Young Carer

A young carer is a child or young person under the age of 25 that cares for a friend or family member who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support.

Some of the tasks young carers take on include:

  • Tidying the house
  • Shopping
  • Helping wash and dress the person they’re caring for
  • Administering medicines
  • Providing emotional support
  • Looking after a younger brother or sister
  • Cooking meals
  • Washing the dishes
  • Helping with bills and money / collecting benefits

No child should have to shoulder such responsibilities alone.

Christmas Appeals

Christmas is a time of giving and helping others. We believe this wholeheartedly and run a number of appeals at Christmas time, including hampers, toy drives and stockings for the elderly.

Our main focus being our Toy Appeal, where we get companies involved as collection points and receive presents from across Berkshire and Hampshire, that we then wrap and send to families in need of a little extra Christmas cheer. Last year we donate over 3000 Christmas presents across Hampshire and Berkshire
